FlowSoft's History
FlowSoft has just completed our 6th year on the Internet and 25 years
as a provider of flow measurement and control software. Organized in 1977,
FlowSoft started providing personal computer software at a time when
computers were rare and expensive.
In the 1970's most engineers were forced to deal with main frame
computers for complex calculations such as flow element sizing. The time
it took to punch cards, take them to the data processing center, and wait
for the printouts made the process almost unusable.
FlowSoft's founder felt that there had to be a better way. Using a
personal computer, he created the forerunner of today's ORIFICE for
Windows. When engineers found that they could quickly and easily size a
flow element in less than 5 minutes, the business took off. And the rest
is history!
Sidenote:
Twenty five (25) years ago, a personal computer would set you back
$3,000 to $5,000 dollars! I'm not sure what that equates to in today's
dollars but certainly it would be $10,000 to $20,000 dollars.
Today you sit in front of a 128 megabyte computer with 20 gigabytes of
memory that cost you less than $1,000. In 1977, for 3 to 4 times the money
you would have a computer with 48 kilobytes of memory and less than 1/2
megabyte of disc storage.
